Research

Conventional reservoirs have produced oil and gas commercially since 1859. Since then, these geologically simple subsurface regions have supplied a vast amount of energy because relatively straightforward methods can extract oil and gas from them economically. Research is needed to improve practices that keep production levels strong as recovery levels change due to hydrocarbon extraction.

Focus Areas

Research specialties in conventional energy resources development and assessment include:

  • Fluid and gas or foam behavior
  • Fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs
  • Formation evaluation and reservoir performance analysis
  • Nanotechnologies
  • Produced water studies
  • Regulation and reporting
  • Reserves estimation
  • Reservoir simulation
  • Rock mechanics
  • Thermal applications
