Overview
The human systems engineering program in France provides Texas A&M University students with an in-depth experience in French language, culture, history, government, and economics, in addition to their technical field and in-class experience. ISEN 330 teaches the principles of human factors and ergonomics, emphasizing design to support human capabilities, limitations, and interaction tendencies in sociotechnical work systems, integrating case studies in manufacturing, medicine, aerospace, ground transportation, and computer interaction. Topics of the class include human information processing, physiological and biomechanical functioning, and implications for the design of the workplace and jobs. Students will have direct interaction with French students not only in the classroom but in a social setting as well, enhancing the cultural experience and giving a distinctive perception of what life in France is really like, contributing to the students’ global competency development and preparation to join the global engineering industry. This connection with the community makes the program unique. The primary location and host university is the campus of Arts et Métiers located in Aix-en-Provence, France. Aix-en-Provence is a vibrant, modest-size, charming, and engaging city in the southern coastal region of France. Housing is provided in local student dorms. The program includes a long weekend in Paris, visiting the city and the Paris campus of Arts et Métiers. Engineering and French language and culture classes are taught at the Aix-en-Provence campus of Arts et Métiers. The location provides ready access to the nearby city of Marseille, the French Riviera Mediterranean coast, the southern Alps, and additional European destinations. The program schedule includes two to three long weekends to explore other destinations as students may desire. The high-speed train station and Marseille airport are easily reached by bus for leisure travel on the free weekends. Popular places students have visited in recent years include Nice, Cannes and Chamonix (France), Barcelona (Spain), London (England), Edinburg (Scotland), Rome, Venice, and Florence (Italy), Munich and Berlin (Germany), and Geneva and Interlaken (Switzerland).
