Become a peer mentor to incoming first-generation engineering students. The First Generation Engineering (FGEn) student mentoring program within Texas A&M University's College of Engineering will recruit peer mentors for the 2024-25 academic year.
Peer mentors play a critical role in the success of the FGEn program by providing an academic and social support network to help ease the transition from high school to college.
If selected, you will receive mentor training, develop your leadership skills, and have several opportunities to become more involved in the College of Engineering.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the peer mentorship program, you must:
- Be enrolled as a junior or senior in the College of Engineering in Fall 2024,
- Commit to serve as a mentor for the entire 2024-25 academic year (Fall and Spring),
- Have successfully completed all math, science (physics/chemistry) and first-year engineering courses,
- Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75,
- Complete an online application (coming soon).
Responsibilities
As a peer mentor, you must attend training prior to the start of the academic year (around mid-August) and commit approximately 10 to 12 hours per month to meet with your mentees. The overall time commitment may include the following tasks:
- Plan a monthly social event with your mentees
- Submit reports on mentor meetings on Chronus (mentoring management system)
- Attend scheduled meetings with program staff (usually two times a semester)
- Attend FGEn events and activities (about four per year, such as Aggieland Saturday, New Student Conferences and other promotional events)
Compensation
If selected, you will receive a stipend of $500 at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters (total of $1,000) for your participation in the FGEn mentor program.
Applications opening soon.
