This two-week virtual boot camp introduces incoming first-year engineering students to Python programming concepts and skills right before the Fall semester. Each VIP Boot Camp has daily instructional sessions led by first-year engineering faculty members who teach the ENGR 102 course, which focuses on Python programming. Exposing first-generation students to Python programming just prior to their enrollment in ENGR 102 provides boot camp participants with fundamental programming skills and boosts confidence as students approach the ENGR 102 course.
In addition to the instruction from first-year faculty members, boot camp participants also interact with student peer mentors who lead virtual supplemental sessions and assist participants with completing assignments and understanding concepts. Peer mentors receive leadership and mentorship training and assist in creating a community with the boot camp participants. In the Fall semester, VIP Boot Camp participants are required to attend review sessions during the Fall semester to help prepare for their ENGR 102 exams.
Applications for participants open in early May and close in early June.
Applications for peer mentors open in late April and close in early June.
