Serving as an editor is both a professional milestone and a natural extension of my long-standing involvement with the journal. This role is a recognition of past contributions and a meaningful responsibility to help shape the future of process safety research and practice.

Chemical engineering professor Dr. Qingsheng Wang has been named the newest editor for the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries

Wang is the only editor based in the United States, with the other four editors located in Canada, Japan, Italy and Belgium.

“Being appointed as an editor for this journal is a tremendous honor,” Wang said. “The journal is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious publications in the field of process safety. Only highly regarded experts with a strong reputation and demonstrated impact are invited to serve as editors.”

As an editor, Wang will oversee the handling of manuscripts, selecting qualified reviewers from the field to evaluate the manuscript and make final editorial decisions.

“I ensure the work is methodologically sound, ethical, and contributes meaningfully to the field,” Wang said. “I work with other editors and the editorial board to adjust the journal’s aims/scope based on emerging trends and represent the journal at conferences and encourage submissions from quality authors.”

This role ties into Wang's research, which focuses on process safety, artificial intelligence and energy safety — areas that align closely with the journal’s core scope. The journal focuses on loss prevention practices within the process industries, with particular emphasis on chemical and process plant safety.

Chemical and process safety is also the central point of Wang’s book “Machine Learning in Chemical Safety and Health: Fundamentals with Applications,” published in 2023. Wang’s book filled a gap in research on the applications of machine learning in chemical safety and health.

The journal has consistently served as the primary venue for disseminating his research since Wang began publishing in the journal while working on his doctorate. Many of Wang’s impactful studies have appeared in the journal.

Wang hopes to maintain the prestigious nature of the journal as a central platform for engaging with the process safety community.

“Serving as an editor is both a professional milestone and a natural extension of my long-standing involvement with the journal,” Wang said. “This role is a recognition of past contributions and a meaningful responsibility to help shape the future of process safety research and practice.”
