Since graduating from Texas A&M University with a civil engineering degree, Judge Leonard “Matt” Sebesta Jr. ’84 has served his community as an engineer, surveyor, City Councilman, Mayor, County Commissioner and now County Judge. Sebesta is proud to be an Aggie and to serve Brazoria County's citizens. The Judge Matt Sebesta Jr. ’84 Endowed Scholarship reflects his gratitude to both communities he calls home.

Sebesta — who received the Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Graduate Award in 2021 — hopes this scholarship will lighten the financial burden of an Aggie from Brazoria County pursuing an undergraduate degree in civil engineering.

“I would not be the person that I am today without the education that I received from Texas A&M University, and I hope to be able to assist young engineers to achieve their dreams with the same quality education that I was fortunate to have received,” Sebesta said.

As a student, Sebesta experienced the life-changing impact a scholarship can provide when he was awarded a four-year scholarship from his father’s employer, Phillips 66.

“At that time, it paid for approximately 25% of all my expenses and was a tremendous help to both me and my parents as I have five younger siblings who all attended college,” Sebesta said.

Sebesta’s service has led him down many paths, each creating a lasting impact on his community.

“Beginning in 2008, I took my passion for golf and chose to host an annual golf tournament to benefit a charity,” Sebesta said.

From 2008 to 2021, the tournament proceeds supported the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Beginning in 2022, the proceeds have benefited Actions Inc. of Brazoria County, an organization dedicated to feeding the elderly. Nearly $1 million has been raised since the tournament began.

With this endowment, Sebesta continues to create a lasting impact on his university, his county and the dreams of future generations of Aggie engineers.
