The Houston chapter of ASM International selected four students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University as scholarship recipients.

“This scholarship will help me purchase essential school supplies, including textbooks and a new computer, which are critical for my academic success,” said Chase Katz, one of the scholarship recipients. “I am extremely grateful for this scholarship and the opportunities the ASM Houston chapter has provided. I hope to see continued growth in student involvement with this chapter, enabling more students to participate in their events.”

ASM International is the world’s largest and most established materials information society, helping to further the field and connect a global network of researchers.  The Houston Chapter has more than 1,000 individuals and corporate members.

“These scholarships offset the financial burden of education and allow students to focus on academic pursuits,” said Dr. Brady G. Butler, visiting assistant professor in the materials science and engineering department. “These scholarships highlight the importance of this institution to our local industrial base, allowing students to continue communicating, collaborating and finding jobs with industrial partners and members of ASM International.”

The four students who received scholarships include Katz and John Lamoglia-Smith, both seniors, and Robbie Palm, a junior, who were recipients of the C.F. Lewis Scholarship. Additionally, Charles Ribardo, a graduate student, received the Wayne Quantz Scholarship.

“When I was accepted for the scholarship, I spoke with many employers who were super friendly and gave a lot of advice and insight about internships and other opportunities,” said Palm. “These past years of college, I have been taking out loans to pay off my student tuition and having this scholarship will help remove some of those costs, which is a huge help for me. I can’t wait to further my connections with ASM International and to be more involved with all their activities and events.”

The scholarships are a reflection of the department’s commitment to developing skilled members of the future workforce and presenting students with opportunities to network and grow in their careers in the materials science and engineering field.

ASM International will be offering scholarships in 2025. If interested in applying, students can visit www.asmhou.org The deadline for consideration in this year’s scholarship program is March 15, 2025.
