In memory of the love of his life, Richard Wolters ’66 established the Ilene Wolters Endowed Scholarship in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University. This gift, honoring his wife, reflects a lifetime of partnership, love and shared support for Texas A&M.
Building a Life Together

Richard’s connection to Texas A&M began in the 1960s, when he earned degrees in mechanical engineering in 1967 and nuclear engineering in 1969. During his time in Aggieland, he lettered in track and cross country and was a cadet in the Corps. His studies led to a storied career with General Electric, where he traveled around the world developing nuclear fuel designs. Yet, he says, his journey was deeply shaped by Ilene’s unwavering support.
Ilene graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1965, but her loyalty extended to the Aggies, often standing beside Richard in Kyle Field — even when A&M played her alma mater. “We loved each other very much, and I miss her every day,” Richard said. He is proud of their journey together from high school sweethearts in La Marque, Texas, to their wedding on June 5, 1966, totaling 57 years of marriage.

“She was the best mom and wife in the universe,” Richard said.
As dedicated elementary school teacher in Bryan and College Station, Ilene worked tirelessly to support Richard’s career in nuclear engineering. Her efforts made it possible for him to achieve his goals, and her consistent encouragement was a cornerstone of their life together.
“She was so smart, talented and funny!” Richard said, adding that Ilene’s faith and love inspired everyone who knew her. “Ilene loved God, believed in Jesus, and read the Bible daily.” Even in her final years, Ilene’s kindness and vibrant spirit continued to shine.

A Legacy of Love and Support
Together, Richard and Ilene raised three children — Lelisa, Melanie and Ryan — and were blessed with eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Reflecting on their 63 years together, Richard remarked, “I was so glad God gave her to me for a lifetime.”
The establishment of the Ilene Wolters Endowed Scholarship ensures that their love story will leave a lasting impact on the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M. Richard hopes the scholarship will support deserving students in completing their degrees, offering them the opportunity to follow their dreams, just as he once did.
Through this heartfelt gift, Ilene’s name will forever be linked to Aggieland, inspiring future generations of engineers to pursue their goals with the same dedication and passion that defined her life.

How to give
