The Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University is ranked #1 in petroleum engineering undergraduate programs in schools that offer a doctoral degree, according to the recently released 2024 U.S. News & World Report Rankings.

“It is a great honor to receive such recognition from our peers," said Dr. Akhil Datta-Gupta, L.F. Peterson ’36 Chair I and interim department head of the petroleum engineering department. "This ranking reflects the dedication and hard work of our award-winning faculty and the students who come here to learn to be leaders in the field. We will continue producing the highest quality graduates while advancing the frontiers in petroleum engineering and maintaining our strong ties with the industry.” 

The department offers a Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Engineering, Master of Science and doctoral programs. It also has an online Master of Engineering program for students who want to continue working while advancing their academics.

The 39 faculty members in the department include three National Academy of Engineering members, seven Society of Petroleum Engineering honorary members and 19 Society of Petroleum Engineers distinguished members.
