Dr. Nate Veldt, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Activity Group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms (SIAG/ACDA) Early Career Prize.
Established in 2020, the SIAG/ACDA prize is awarded every two years and recognizes an outstanding early-career researcher for their distinguished contributions to the field of applied and computational discrete algorithms. Veldt was chosen to receive the award for his influential work — both in terms of algorithms and implementations — to clustering and discrete optimization, namely in graph and hypergraph clustering and partitioning.
“I’m honored and excited to receive this recognition from SIAM,” said Veldt. “The ACDA activity group has been a wonderful and welcoming research community to be a part of, and it’s very encouraging to hear about the impact my research in this area has had so far. I’m grateful for the many wonderful collaborators and mentors I have had the privilege to work with and learn from since the start of my career. This would not have been possible without them.”
Veldt earned his Ph.D. in mathematics with a concentration in computational science from Purdue University. He received his bachelor’s in mathematics from Wheaton College (Illinois). His research focuses on algorithms and optimization techniques for data science and network analysis.
Veldt will be recognized at the 2023 SIAM Conference on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms on May 31-June 2 in Seattle, where he will give a brief presentation on his research.
