Dr. J. Maurice Rojas, Texas A&M University mathematician and affiliate faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been selected to the 2019 class of American Mathematical Society (AMS) Fellows.

This designation recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication and utilization of mathematics. Rojas was cited “for contributions to algorithmic algebraic geometry, complexity theory, and scientific computation, and mentoring of student research at all levels.”

Rojas joined the Texas A&M mathematics faculty in 2001, and since 2013 has held a courtesy appointment in the computer science and engineering department. He earned master’s degrees in both mathematics and computer science as well as a doctoral degree in applied mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. Rojas completed postdoctoral study at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, MIT and City University of Hong Kong, and held visiting positions at John Hopkins University, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, and Sandia National Laboratories prior to coming to Texas A&M.

His research in algebraic geometry and algorithmic complexity is extensively published and funded primarily by the National Science Foundation, including through a 2004 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award.

Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the 30,000-member AMS fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthens mathematical education, and fosters awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.
