Dr. Alexei Poludnenko, associate professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, received the 2018 Distinguished Paper Award in the Detonations, Explosions, and Supersonic Combustion colloquium from The Combustion Institute at the 37th International Symposium on Combustion.

The paper “Compressible turbulent flame speeds of highly turbulent standing flames,” was co-authored by Jonathan Sosa, Jessica Chambers, and Kareem A. Ahmed from the University of Central Florida and Vadim N. Gamezo from the Naval Research Laboratory.

The paper presents the first measurement of turbulent burning velocities of a highly turbulent compressible standing flame induced by shock-driven turbulence in a Turbulent Shock Tube. It is the second consecutive distinguished paper award for the group. The previous award was given at the 36th International Symposium on Combustion.

Distinguished papers are selected biennially from among the scientific papers presented during the International Symposium on Combustion and accepted for publication in the “Proceedings of The Combustion Institute.” One paper is selected for each represented colloquium as the most distinguished in quality, achievement, and significance.

One paper in each colloquium is selected as a distinguished paper. The 13 distinguished papers now have the chance of winning the Silver Combustion Medal to be awarded during the 39th Symposium in Adelaide, Australia.
