A team of researchers from Texas A&M University at College Station and Texas A&M University at Qatar has received the 2018 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Signal Processing Magazine Best Column Award.

The award was given to Dr. Erchin Serpedin and Dr. Khalid Qaraqe, along with their former doctoral student Dr. Sangwoo Park, for their paper titled “Gaussian Assumption: The Least Favorable but the Most Useful,” which was published in the March 2013 issue of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.

The paper explains how to develop signal processing estimation techniques that are robust to the distribution of noise. The work presented in this paper has countless applications in many fields, such as signal and image processing, computer vision, machine learning, radar, biomedical engineering, wireless communications and system identification.

The award will be presented during the IEEE Signal Processing Society's awards ceremony that will be held during the 2019 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP 2019). ICASSP represents the flagship conference of IEEE Signal Processing Society, and is the foremost and most comprehensive international conference on signal processing and its applications.

Serpedin is a professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at Texas A&M in College Station. His research interests lie in the fields of signal processing, machine learning and big data analytics and their applications in bioinformatics, wireless communications, cybersecurity and smart grids. Qaraqe is a professor in the electrical and computer engineering program at Texas A&M at Qatar. His research interests lie in the fields of wireless communications and remote health technologies.
