The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University was ranked seventh internationally among its peers in a recently released ShanghaiRankings report.
The department improved three places from 10th in 2017, surpassing the former seventh-ranked Harvard University.
“I am delighted to be ranked among the very top mechanical engineering departments in the world,” said Department Head Dr. Andreas Polycarpou. “This is truly a testament to our faculty’s important, groundbreaking contributions in areas of national importance. Not only do we educate some of the best and brightest mechanical engineering students, but we also conduct basic and applied research that touches the lives of people in Texas and around the world.”
To be considered for the mechanical engineering ShanghaiRankings report, universities must meet a minimum requirement of 100 research publications over a five-year period. Eligible programs are then judged in five areas: number of papers authored, the rate of citation for that university's paper versus the average rate for that field, international collaboration, the number of papers published in top journals and the total number of awards given since 1981 to full-time faculty while working in the department.
