Dr. Javier Jo, associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University, will play a role and contribute to the national biomedical research effort as a standing member of the Biomedical Imaging Technology-A (BMIT-A) study section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
“Study sections provide recommendations on what research efforts merit funding with a federal budget,” Jo said. “Such recommendations define the directions of the biomedical research performed in this country.”
Jo will serve with BMIT-A for six years, where he will be expected to demonstrate mature judgment, objectivity and teamwork. Members of NIH study sections are invited by their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals and other significant scientific achievements.
Members of the BMIT-A study section review applications that involve design and development of medical imaging system technologies, their components, software and mathematical methods for studies at the cellular, organ, small or large animal, and human scale. They will then make recommendations as to which to consider for funding.
“As a principal investigator for NIH grants, I am very grateful for the service provided by the many study section members that in the past have reviewed and continue to review my grant applications,” Jo said. “These reviewers take a considerable amount of time carefully studying your research applications and provide sound advice on how to make your proposed research project more impactful.”
Jo added that this will also be an opportunity to learn about recent developments in other related specialized fields, as well as to network with top researchers within and outside his professional community.
“All these would provide great opportunities to establish new collaborations and/or explore new directions for my research program,” he said.
