Texas A&M University was recently ranked seventh in the nation and 10th in the world for mechanical engineering, according to the mechanical engineering subject area in the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) from ShanghaiRanking.
To be included in a subject ranking, each university was required to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2011-15. Different weights were allotted to the gauges for different subjects. For each gauge, institutions were calculated as a percentage of the top-scored institution and then multiplied by the allocated weight. From there, a final score was calculated.
“To be ranked among the top 10 institutions in the world for our field is an enormous accomplishment, and one that I do not take lightly,” said Dr. Andreas Polycarpou, mechanical engineering department head, James J. Cain Chair and Meinhard H. Kotzebue '14 Professor. “It is an honor to be recognized in this way for our renowned faculty, excellent academic standards and highly impactful, ongoing research.”
ARWU is a prominent influence due to its methodology being scientifically sound, stable and transparent.
In the latest U.S. News and World Report, both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the department were ranked eighth in the nation among public institutions.
