Dr. Alaa Elwany, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been selected to receive the 2017 Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
The award recognizes manufacturing engineers who have made exceptional contributions and accomplishments in the manufacturing industry.
“SME is one of the key professional societies that focuses on my specific field of research: additive manufacturing and 3-D printing,” Elwany said. “While receiving recognition from such a prestigious institute is a great honor on the personal level, it is more importantly a reassuring indicator that the advanced manufacturing research being conducted by Texas A&M’s faculty at large is well received by national leaders in the field.”
Elwany joined the industrial and systems engineering department at Texas A&M in 2013. Before that, he was a research engineer with General Motors and an assistant professor at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. His research focuses on the modeling, monitoring and control of advanced manufacturing processes, with emphasis on additive manufacturing processes for metal parts.
