Three Texas A&M University engineering students have been awarded scholarships from the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). All three accepted their award at the NSBE national convention in Boston.
Eugene Obeng, a junior chemical engineering major and the membership chair for the NSBE TAMU Chapter, was awarded the General Mills scholarship.
Adaora Atuegbu, a freshman in engineering, was awarded the Board of Corporate Affiliates scholarship. Atuegbu, who plans on studying electrical engineering, is the chapter’s public relations chair and a freshman executive board member.
Alexis Scott, a senior in industrial engineering and the programs chair for the chapter, was awarded the Fulfilling the Legacy scholarship.
The students traveled to Boston in March for the NSBE’s 2016 Annual Convention. Attending the convention gave these students an opportunity to network with industries and their peers while participating in seminars and forums, as well as recruiting.
“I am excited about the prospects of growing my network of professionals, developing my skills in workshops and professional developmental events, as well as gaining greater insight into academic excellence at the national level,” said Obeng.
The three students have also become involved with the Access and Inclusion Program within the Dwight Look College of Engineering. The program works with underrepresented students on campus and provides additional resources for their success, both academically and professionally.
“I am extremely proud of our students,” said Dr. Sonia Garcia, senior director of the Access and Inclusion Program. “It is incredibly rewarding to see our TAMU NSBE students being recognized nationally for the superb work on their chapter, but also, and most importantly, for their academic accomplishments. They are certainly great role models for the rest of the community.”
The mission of the NSBE is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.
