More than 80 people who work in the oil and gas industry in Qatar attended the 2016 International Workshop on Computational Methods with Applications to Oil and Gas, hosted by Texas A&M University at Qatar.

The workshop, held at the Hamad bin Khalifa University Student Center in Education City, consisted of lectures, short courses and software tutorials given by leading academicians and experienced practicing engineers. Attendees included practicing engineers working in Qatar’s oil and gas industry, as well as researchers, faculty and graduate students who are working on oil and gas-related research problems in Qatar.

The workshop also gathered stakeholders and local and international experts from academia and industry to discuss recent research and trends in computational aspects of mechanics and materials science with applications to the oil and gas industry and their role in tackling complex problems.

“At Texas A&M at Qatar, our vision is to be the premier provider of engineering education in Qatar and the region, and that includes our outreach activities in STEM, our conferences and symposia, and our continuing education,” said Dr. Eyad Masad, vice dean of Texas A&M at Qatar. “This workshop illustrates the importance of working together with industry, government and academic partners to develop the highly skilled workforce that Qatar needs to drive its future, and to develop scientific solutions that have direct impact on the world around us.”

Dr. Sami El Borgi from Texas A&M at Qatar’s mechanical engineering program and Dr. Othmane Bouhali from the Texas A&M at Qatar advanced scientific computing group jointly organized the workshop, which featured 19 speakers in 24 sessions.

The first day consisted of plenary lectures and presentations, while the second day consisted of short courses and tutorials on software used in the oil and gas industry. Key speakers included Dr. J.N. Reddy, University Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University and a member of the U.S. National Academy; Dr. Normand Mousseau from the University of Montreal; and Dr. Andreas Polycarpou, professor and head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. Other presenters came from Qatar, the United States, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Canada and France.
