Dr. Jun Zou, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been elected Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).
Zou’s election to Senior Member of both leading technical societies was based on his significant and unique contributions in the interdisciplinary research of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and their applications in bio-optical and acoustic sensing and imaging.
He pioneered the development of a number of new MEMS devices, including micro optical probes for in-vivo optical spectroscopy, micromachined silicon delay-line circuits for direct acoustic signal processing and liquid-immersion micro scanning mirrors for optical and acoustic beam co-steering. These devices are expected to bring fundamental breakthroughs in the performance and miniaturization of existing optical/acoustic sensing and imaging systems and also in their translation into clinical practice.
Zou joined the department in 2004 after the completion of his Ph.D. and two-year postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is affiliated with the Device Sciences and Nanotechnology group within the department.
His current interests lie in the research and development of micro optical and acoustic devices and systems for sensing and imaging applications, which are supported by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and the March of Dimes Foundation.
