Bub _344x 350Cassandra Bub, undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University, created a guitar tuner and metronome that was developed by Microsoft.

Bub and her fellow interns developed the two programs while interning for Microsoft after her freshman year at Texas A&M. Microsoft has added widgets to Bing, its search engine, so the public can access the programs.

As a flutist, Bub’s interest in music began long before her internship with Microsoft. Her musical skills allowed her to provide a unique perspective to her student team.

“I wanted to create a product that could be used by my friends,” Bub said. “Now, whenever my friends forget their tuner or need to stay on beat, they can have access to the tools they need for free.”

The tuner, which can be accessed by searching “guitar tuner” on Bing’s website, includes the most popular guitar settings and replay of notes that allow the user to tune their guitar by ear.

The metronome can be accessed by searching “metronome” on Bing’s website. It allows the user to hear a selected beat, while also allowing the user to change the speed of the beat. The use of this widget allows musicians to stay on beat during practice.

Bub is a sophomore in the department. She is in the Engineering Honors program with a computer science and engineering track.

“This internship allowed me to take my passion for music and for computing and combine the two,” Bub said. “I hope to be of service to many musicians through this project.”
