The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University has selected Melanie Bell as chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Advisory Council.

“I’m excited to lead the advisory council this year,” Bell said. “Giving back to Texas A&M is something that has always been my goal. This position provides one more avenue to achieve that goal.”

Bell is employed by Chevron where she works as the strategy, architecture and emerging technology manager. She and her team of specialized architects develop and maintain the company’s technology strategy. Bell has worked for Chevron since 1991 and has represented Chevron in the department’s Industrial Affiliates Program(IAP). Her corporate and IAP experiences allow her to provide strategic vision and leadership to the advisory council.

As chair of the advisory council, Bell will lead the 25 members as they assist the department. The advisory council provides guidance to the department on strategic planning, fundraising and education. They serve as the department’s connection with industry, engineering communities, government agencies and former students.

The advisory council is composed of former students who have proven leadership in the fields of computer science and computer engineering. Their expertise contributes to the council’s objectives and assists the department in remaining industry relevant.

Bell graduated from Texas A&M in 1990 with a degree in applied mathematics. Since then, she has worked to give back to the university. She and her sister recently created an endowed presidential scholarship for incoming freshmen in engineering or science majors.

“We really enjoy giving back and getting to meet the students each year,” Bell said.

In addition to her job and volunteering for computer science, Bell is an aerial arts instructor in Houston where she teaches static trapeze and fabric. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking and traveling.
