Students from across the country are spending their summer conducting scientific research with faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University.
The Research Experience for Undergraduates program (REU), funded by the National Science Foundation, is a nationwide research program for undergraduates. Students work with a faculty mentor to conduct real-world research and understand the atmosphere of graduate school.
Throughout the summer, students will develop a personal website, a research paper, a research poster, and complete two presentations. Additionally, students will attend weekly brown bag luncheons to hear from guest speakers and graduate students. They will also network with professionals in the industry.
Lilas Dinh, a senior at George Mason University pointed to the community that is developed through the program.
“Everyone is very friendly and willing to help,” Dinh said. “I will keep these friends for the rest of my life.”
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering received two grants from the National Science Foundation and one grant from
the Dwight Look College of Engineering to host 27 students for the 10-week program. The grants cover all expenses for students and provide them with a stipend for their research.
“This is a great program to get students excited about research,” said Theresa Roberts, coordinator of the REU program.
