Murphy, Raytheon Professor in the Dwight Look College of Engineering's Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University and director of the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station's (TEES) Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR) and the Center for Emergency Informatics, was named one of the Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers for 2015 in the April issue of Government Technology*, an online publication and division of e.Republic, Inc.

Murphy is a founder of the field of disaster robotics and was selected for her use of innovative robotic technology to solve emergency challenges encompassing hurricanes, chemical and radiological events, earthquakes, and infectious diseases to name just a few. Dr. Murphy has deployed to 18 incidents, including the 9/11 World Trade Center collapse, Hurricane Katrina, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Most recently she led a team that flew small UAVs at the Bennett Landfill superfund site. Her recent book, Disaster Robotics, won an honorable mention for Engineering and Technology at the 2015 the American Publishers PROSE Award.

In 2008, Murphy joined the Texas A&M faculty bringing with her CRASAR and founding the TEES Center for Emergency Informatics to engage faculty in the larger issues of using new sources of information from unmanned systems, wireless networks, social media, etc. to get the right data to the right agencies at the right time. The CEI conducts major exercises as Disaster City, a 52-acre training facility created by the Texas Engineering Extension Service, an agency in The Texas A&M University System.

Among her many awards and recognitions are Fast Company's Most Influential Women of 2011, AUVSI Foundation's Al Aube Outstanding Contributor Award, Carnegie Mellon's Field Robotics Institute "Pioneer in Field Robotics," TIME Magazine Innovators in Artificial Intelligence, US Air Force Exemplary Civilian Service Award for distinguished service on the USAF Scientific Advisory Board (2005), National Institute for Urban Search and Rescue Eagle Award (2001).

Murphy is an IEEE Fellow. She received her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Georgia Tech.
