Dr. Judea Pearl will present The Science of Cause and Effect on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 10:20 a.m. in room 169 of the Blocker Building on the Texas A&M campus.
This CSE Distinguished Lecturer Seminar is cohosted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Conflict and Development, Agricultural Economics, and the Department of Statistics.
In his talk Dr. Pearl will review concepts, principles, and mathematical tools that were found useful in transforming cause and effect relationships. He will demonstrate their applications in several data-intensive sciences.
Dr. Pearl is a Professor of Computer Science and Statistics at UCLA. Author of several hundreds research papers, he also has written three books: Heuristics (1984), Probabilistic Reasoning (1988), and Causality (2000; 2009). Dr. Pearl is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the IEEE, AAAI, and Cognitive Science Society.
In 2008 Dr. Pearl received the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Computer and Cognitive Science and in 2011 the David Rumelhart Prize from the Cognitive Science Society. In 2012 he received the Technion's Harvey Prize and the ACM A.M. Turing Award.
