Texas A&M University will host a Workshop entitled “Science of Information Days” at Rudder Tower this week on April 3rd and 4th, sponsored by the NSF Science and Technology Center for Science of Information. The workshop, organized by professors P. R. Kumar and Alex Sprintson of the Computer Engineering and Systems Group of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, will focus on information theory, control theory and statistics in biological information processing.
It will begin on the evening of April 3 with a tutorial on “Engineering Methods and Information Science in Biology,” by professors Xiaoning Qian and Byung-Jun Yoon of Texas A&M, reviewing biological, mathematical and statistical analysis concepts. Qian will discuss molecular biology, mathematical models for modeling biological networks and Boolean networks, while Yoon will address modeling and analysis of biological networks and sequences.
On April 4, there will be talks by six distinguished researchers from multiple backgrounds. Professor M. Vidyasagar from the University of Texas at Dallas will discuss “Machine Learning Methods for the Stratification of Cancer Patients,” Professor John Goutsias of John Hopkins University will focus on “Statistical Thermodynamic Analysis Reveals the Emergence of Critical Behavior in Complex Reaction Networks,” Dr. Christina Leslie of Sloan Kettering Institute will discuss “Modeling Gene Regulatory Programs in Cancer,” Professor Todd Coleman of the University of California at San Diego will discuss “Statistical Thermodynamic Analysis Reveals the Emergence of Critical Behavior in Complex Reaction Networks,” Professor Ed Dougherty of Texas A&M will discuss “Operator Design in the Presence of Uncertainty” and Professor Bani Mallick, of Texas A&M will have a discussion on “Bayesian Gaussian Graphical Models and Their Applications.” The Workshop will conclude with a poster session on April 4.
