Porter JayDr. Jay Porter, professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M University has been selected to receive the American Society for Engineering Education’s 2014 Frederick J. Berger Award.

The award recognizes excellence in engineering technology to include leadership in curriculum, scholarly contributions, innovative techniques, or administration in engineering technology education.  The award jointly recognizes the contributions of the individual and the school or department that demonstrates leadership in these areas.

Porter was specifically cited for his “innovative teaching, extensive curricular development, creative laboratory development, and superb administrative leadership of the Electronic Systems Engineering Technology (ESET) program” and his “effective coupling of industry with academia.”

Porter joined the faculty at Texas A&M in 1998 and is the program director of the ESET program. In that role, he manages program resources, mentors junior faculty and has successfully led curriculum restricting to merge two related programs into a single, stream-lined program focused in the area of electronics product and system development. This new focus has been primarily responsible for the 50 percent enrollment growth the program has experienced over the last three years.

The award will be presented at the Annual Awards Ceremony of the 2014 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition on June 16, in Indianapolis.
