Dsc _2359Dr. Ibrahim Karaman has been appointed head of the newly formed Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University. Karaman’s appointment is effective beginning May 1.

Dr. M. Katherine Banks, vice chancellor and dean of engineering, and Dr. H. Joseph Newton, dean of the College of Science, made the announcement jointly.

Karaman, who has been serving as the interim head since the formation of the department in April 2013, joined the Texas A&M mechanical engineering faculty in 2000. He has made numerous contributions in the areas of processing and characterization of crystalline materials and has published more than 160 refereed journal articles in prestigious journals. His contributions have been recognized through several awards and honors, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award; the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society Robert Lansing Hardy Award; and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station Senior Fellow Award. He earned the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2001.

Karaman earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, all in mechanical engineering.
