Dr. Valerie TaylorDr. Valerie Taylor, senior associate dean for academic affairs and the Royce E. Wisenbaker professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been invited by The National Research Council (NRC) to join the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM).

CWSEM focuses on the education and employment of women scientists and engineers. The committee’s mandate is to coordinate, monitor and advocate action to increase participation of women in science, engineering and medicine.

Dr. Taylor will serve a two-year term and will work with the committee to investigate many aspects of women’s education and employment in science, engineering and medicine. The committee will focus on women’s career pathways and the gender differences in recruitment, retention and advancement. In addition, the committee will assist in dispersing information about mentoring, sponsorship and work-life balance and promote women to join technical fields and participate globally. The committee is chaired by Rita R. Colwell, a member of the National Academy of Science and Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
