Nuclear Engineering graduate student Megan Pritchard, former department head Dr. Alan Walter, and former student Dr. Braden Goddard traveled to Doha, Qatar to participate in the 3rd WNU School on Radiation Technologies, held March 7-20, 2014. The two-week program was aimed at future leaders in the radiation and radioisotope field, with an emphases on broadening the knowledge of the students, familiarizing them with the main issues encountered by practitioners in the field, and developing a worldwide network of contacts for the participants. WNU-2.jpg

The 61 student participants of the program represented 30 different countries, with varying backgrounds in the nuclear field. The discussed topics encompassed the production of radio isotopes, medical applications, industrial applications, radiation safety, nuclear security, economics, environmental concerns, decommissioning, and transportation. Lectures were limited to the morning sessions with working groups, leaving lecture discussion, site tours, and cultural excursions to occur in the afternoons and evenings to better enhance the learning experience.

The WNU RT School is organized by the WNU Coordinating Centre in London and in association with leading institutes of nuclear learning. The RT School receives technical support from the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the World Council on Isotopes. Previous RT Schools have been run in cooperation with Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and with the Association of Imaging Producers and Equipment Suppliers (AIPES). The next WNU School on Radiation Technologies will take place in 2016, with the location yet to be determined.
