Industrial and systems engineering student ambassadors are a group of students who not only demonstrate excellent academic records, but also assist in multiple capacities, including the advancement of recruitment and outreach in the Wm Michael Barnes '64 Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University. The students serve as the first representatives of the department to prospective students, current students, former students, industry advisors and other visitors.  

Activities

  • Recruitment
    • Participate and occasionally lead departmental and other engineering student panels for prospective students and their families.
    • Participate in recruitment events.
  • Outreach
    • Participate in outreach events to engage students in industrial and systems engineering.
    • Initiate innovative programs to attract high school students to pursue industrial and systems engineering.
    • Improve programs to attract Entry to a Major students to pursue industrial and systems engineering.
    • Assist in establishing programs for current industrial and systems engineering students.

Selection Process

  • To be eligible for the program, students must:
    • Have completed a minimum of one semester of industrial and systems engineering coursework.
    • Maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
    • Be able to participate in the student ambassador program activities for a full academic year (fall and spring). Summer preferred but not required.
  • Selections will be made based on the following criteria:
    • Interest in participating in the program.
    • Involvement with the department.
    • Demonstration of ability to maintain a strong GPA while participating in extracurricular activities.
    • Leadership and effective communication skills.
    • Must not be on academic probation.
    • Finalists will be interviewed for selection to join the ambassador program.

Program Obligations

  • Commitment for a full academic year (fall, spring, summer preferred but not required).
  • Attend a mandatory training session.
  • Reply to email and/or text messages promptly.
  • Participate in at least two industrial and systems engineering student ambassador events per semester and all scheduled meetings. Note: Time commitment per event should not exceed two hours.
  • Responsible for fulfilling all required duties or finding a replacement if unable to attend.

Program Recognition

  • Recognition at the industrial and systems engineering department’s annual awards and honors banquet.
  • Excellent experience to put on resume and a great opportunity to promote the department.

Students chosen as student ambassadors must always maintain a positive and professional demeanor when dealing with current and prospective students and their parents, wear proper attire (to be outlined in the training session) and stay up to date with news in the department and on campus.
