The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has a long history of cooperation and friendship with the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University. Recently, Texas A&M has received a grant from the U.S. government to honor outstanding undergraduate students seeking a career in nuclear engineering. The award is intended for sophomore, junior and senior students for the 2018 - 2019 academic year. Junior and seniors are encouraged to apply. Sophomores can apply but the award will not be disbursed to them until they become juniors.

Distributions from the grant will be used to provide several scholarships at the $4,000 and $5,000 level. All applications will be reviewed holistically by a department committee who will select recipients in accordance with university policy. The following criteria will be used in the selection of the scholarship recipients:

  1. Applicants must be full-time enrolled undergraduate students majoring in nuclear engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
  2. Applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with the college and department.
  3. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  4. Applicants must submit a statement of purpose*.
  5. Applicants must sign a service agreement whereby the recipient agrees to work in any nuclear-related field. This is broadly defined to include federal or state agencies, national laboratories, the nuclear industry, academia and other aspects of employment for a period of six months for every year of support.

*The statement of purpose submitted by applicants will describe the applicant's interest in nuclear engineering, the objectives of the applicant's educational program and their professional career. This can include what attracts an applicant to nuclear engineering and the applicant's post-graduation plans within a one to three-year period, as well as additional factors that the applicant deems pertinent to their submission. The statement should be approximately 500 words.
