Certificates of Completion and Continuing Education

The mission of the certificate of completion and continuing education program is to address the needs and interests of those individuals, particularly petroleum engineers, who are interested in expanding and updating their knowledge and information in specialized areas of petroleum engineering. These areas include: asset management and economics, drilling, formation evaluation, natural gas, production and reserves, and reservoir engineering.

Successful completion of the certificate program does not result in a graduate degree; however, it does address the needs of a wide audience of individuals, particularly those already working in the field of petroleum engineering seeking to add depth to their existing knowledge.

Costs for the PETE DL certificate program

  • Domestic - $1,800/course
  • International - $3,000/course

The course cost does not include textbooks. Some courses may request additional publications or software. To avoid additional costs related to publications, we recommend you join the Society for Professional Engineers at spe.org

Certificate classes CANNOT be used for college credit

Admission Requirements:

  • Complete and submit the Program Application for approval
  • Submit resume and transcript on .pdf format when completing the online CC/CEA form for approval
  • Receive approval prior to registering for one course online

 General information about certificate programs 

  • Applicants with an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering are preferred
    • If an applicant does not have an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering, the applicant must have an undergraduate degree in another closely related field such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and geology as well as extensive field experience
  • Approval from the Director of the CE DL Program is required for admission into the program
  • The first semester in the program a student may only register for one course
  • Certificates provide focused training in specialized areas
  • Sequences of two or more courses are required
  • Many courses have pre-requisites including advanced math and engineering physics
  • Courses can be of value to satisfy job requirements and/or professional certification requirements
  • Successful completion of a course requires the submission of all required course-related assignments, assessments, and projects by the required due date with a final course grade of C or better.
  • Upon successful completion of a course, the certificate student is awarded 4.5 continuing education units
  • Twelve certificates are currently available including the primary certificate Principles and Practices
  • Certificate courses coincide with our degree program courses listed on the courses page
  • You DO NOT need to apply to the university to gain a certificate
  • If you wish to take courses for college credit, please look at our online Master of Engineering degree, or if you plan to attend campus, the Master of Science and Ph.D. You must apply to the university and be accepted as a degree seeking student to get credit.

This Certificate is for those who have backgrounds in math, physical science, and/or other engineering disciplines who have an interest in the petroleum industry.

Reserves and Evaluation

Four courses leading to a certificate in reserves and evaluation will be offered. The first course (651) is new and focuses on oil and gas reserves definition and reporting regulations and probablistic reserves estimation methods. The second course, also new, and focuses on oil and gas reserves definition and reporting regulations and deterministic estimation methods. The third course will focus on deterministic reserves estimation methods and cash-flow analysis techniques appropriate to evaluate projected revenue streams. The fourth course will discuss probabilistic reserves estimation methods and economic analysis techniques that consider risk and uncertainty in detail. Students will have access to commercial software for computations.
