How to Apply

Admission into our petroleum engineering graduate program is based on many factors. Here is a preparation checklist.

1. Documents needed

Texas A&M University requires:

  • A completed Apply Texas Application
  • A $50 non-refundable application fee for domestic applicants, and a non-refundable $90 fee for international applicants
  • Official transcripts and records from ALL colleges attended
  • GRE scores sent directly from ETS to Texas A&M. (TAMU code 6003)
  • TOEFL scores (minimum score of 80) for international applicants. (TAMU code 6003)

Our department requires:

  • A statement of purpose on the following areas:
    • Your academic and professional preparation
    • Your research area of interest
    • Your post-graduate plans
    • Your résumé or curriculum vitae (to support your application)  
    • Three letters of recommendation (you may use the electronic letter of recommendation system available through

2. Deadlines

Our department deadlines are listed below.

  • Fall semester: apply by December 15 of the previous year (or by December 1 If you are a U.S. resident or permanent resident seeking a Texas A&M fellowship)
  • Summer semester: apply by November 1 of the previous year (Distance Learning students only)
  • Spring semester: apply by September 1 of the previous year

Things to know:

  • All application materials must be completed by the stated deadline
  • These deadlines apply to ALL students seeking funding
  • You are encouraged to submit documents to the admissions office 4 weeks prior to our deadlines to allow for processing time 
  • The majority of admissions are made in the fall

3. Application

  • Your completed application must be on file before we can answer questions about it
  • Our graduate application committee makes admission recommendations to our department head
  • The committee meets periodically throughout the year, not all the time

4. Waiting

Have patience. We cannot rush the process.

Things to know:

  • We do not pre-evaluate - you must submit a completed application to Texas A&M University
  • We encourage you to ask our graduate program staff questions, but please limit any faculty questions to introductions or technical interest discussions only.

5. Funding

Funding decisions are separate from application decisions.

  • Your admission letter will contain funding information
  • Your completed application must be on file before we can answer any admission or financial questions
