The Aggies Invent Junior Halliburton Challenge will take place on October 18-19, 2019, at Texas A&M University. This is an invitation-only, intensive design experience based on the College of Engineering’s Aggies Invent program. Design teams will be made up of high school juniors and seniors from different schools and will be based on the students’ interests. Teams are presented with a needs statement and work through the engineering design process to create a solution, construct a mock-up and “sell” their design to a panel of judges. Halliburton and Texas A&M will provide judges and mentors, allowing students access to experts in design. The winning teams will be presented with prizes, and all students will receive a certificate of participation.

Challenge: With constantly evolving technologies reshaping our daily lives, energy industries from all over the world are seeking solutions to power future generations. How do you combat climate change, yet still meet the rising demand for energy and distribute it to the 7.5 billion people in the world in an affordable and sustainable way? Do you have the energy, creativity, and passion we need to power every corner of this world?

  • Participation is by invitation only.
  • Each invited school may only bring four students.
  • Spark! and Halliburton have joined together to provide $750 travel grants to cover lodging expenses at Texas A&M’s campus hotel, transportation, and meals not provided during the competition. Schools traveling further than 4 hours will be eligible for a $1000 travel grant.
  • All meals — except breakfast on Friday, October 18 — are included.
  • Schools must bring at least one teacher to chaperone students. More advisors and teachers may attend at the school's expense. Teachers are responsible for — and must be in attendance with — students at all times.
  • Teachers will be required to attend informational and professional development sessions during specific portions of the event.
  • Teachers must attend a pre-event evening webinar approximately two weeks prior to the competition.
Student Expectations:
  • Students are encouraged to bring a laptop loaded with CAD software. Students will not have access to a computer lab or printer.
  • This event will mirror best practices for a true engineering team; therefore, students are expected to join/select a team that matches the need statement to which they are drawn. Students from the same school cannot be on the same team.
  • Students are expected to adhere to our campus policies and practices, which includes not wasting resources such as low fidelity prototyping materials.
  • Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required. Safety glasses are provided.

Additional Event Details:
Schools are to arrive by 9 a.m. on Friday, October 18, and depart by 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 19.
