Photo of Dr. Valerie E. TaylorDr. Valerie E. Taylor, Regents Professor and the Wisenbaker Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been named an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Fellow for 2013.

Taylor is recognized for contributions to "performance enhancement of parallel computing applications." Much of her research is on reducing the execution time of applications running on parallel systems and projecting the performance of applications onto current and future parallel systems. Such work is important to hardware vendors and HPC users, she said.

"Performance projections aid hardware vendors in the design of future systems and help HPC users with system procurement." Taylor said.

Taylor is the former head of Texas A&M's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, having served in that role from 2003 to 2011. She is executive director of the Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in IT (CMD-IT), a 501(c )(3) nonprofit organization with a vision of contributing to the national need for an effective workforce in computing and IT through synergistic activities related to minorities and people with disabilities.

Taylor earned her B.S. in electrical and computer engineering and M.S. in computer engineering from Purdue University. She received her Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. From 1991 through 2002, Taylor was a member of the faculty in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Northwestern University. Among her many awards are the Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science, and Diversifying Computing; the MOBE Influencers and Innovators of the Internet and Technology; and the Harriet B. Rigas Education Award. She has been author or co-author on more than 100 papers in the area of HPC. Taylor is a member of Association of Computing Machinery.

The IEEE grade of fellow is conferred by the IEEE board of directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting membership. IEEE fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. 298 individuals have been elevated to IEEE Fellow for 2013.
