Donzis receives prestigious CAREER Award

Dr. Diego Donzis, assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University, has received the prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

NSF established the CAREER program to support junior faculty within the context of their overall career development, combining in a single program the support of research and education of the highest quality and in the broadest sense. Through this program, the NSF emphasizes the importance on the early development of academic careers dedicated to stimulating the discovery process in which the excitement of research is enhanced by inspired teaching and enthusiastic learning.

Donzis received this award for his proposal, "Discoveries in compressible turbulence and turbulent mixing through Petascale simulations and analysis."

His research aims at understanding compressible turbulent flows, which have deep implications for natural and engineering systems through massive simulations enabled by the most powerful computing resources available to the scientific community. His integrated approach of research and education lies at the frontiers of both high-performance computing (HPC) and fluid mechanics.

The project also aims to inspire students to pursue careers in HPC and fluid mechanics, and educate future scientists and engineers capable of deploying Petascale solutions to important societal and technological problems.

Donzis received the B.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from Universidad Tecnologica Nacional (Argentina), and master's and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In the fall of 2009, Donzis joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M.

His research interests include large-scale, high-performance computing, fluid dynamics, turbulence and turbulent mixing.
