Fred Walsh endows fourth Texas A&M University scholarship

Fred G. Walsh of Midland has endowed his fourth scholarship at Texas A&M University, this time for undergraduates studying industrial and systems engineering."I received two scholarships when I was a student at Texas A&M, one from an A&M Club and one from a small independent oil company," said Walsh, who grew up in Archer City, near Wichita Falls. Walsh '74 Endowed Scholarship in Industrial and Systems Engineering targets students demonstrating financial need from Archer, Midland or Smith counties in Texas. Previous scholarships by the owner and president of Walsh Petroleum Inc. benefit the university's business, mechanical engineering and petroleum engineering students. Each of the $25,000 endowments was established through gifts to the Texas A&M Foundation.An industrial engineering major, Walsh was active in Alpha Pi Mu industrial engineering honor society. Just five years after graduation in 1974, he founded Walsh Petroleum Inc., an exploration and production firm. The private company boasts numerous Aggies on staff."I really enjoyed the industrial engineering curriculum," Walsh said. "Because of the basic and practical engineering knowledge I obtained, and the help from some industry courses, the jump to petroleum engineering was easy."Walsh is a member of the Midland A&M Club and regularly makes visits to the College Station campus."Mr. Walsh is an excellent ambassador for the value of an industrial engineering degree and demonstrates the breadth of career opportunities that can arise from a foundation in industrial and systems engineering," said Brett Peters, Texas A&M industrial and systems engineering department head. "We are proud of his professional accomplishments, and we are very grateful that he has chosen to give back to the department. Scholarships are extremely valuable to financially assist deserving students with their education and to continue to attract the best students to Texas A&M.
