These low fidelity machines are available in the open 3D printing lab located in ENPH 314 for all MEEN students. The dedicated computer or tablet with Simplify3D installed is ready for each printer to provide advanced 3D printing experiences.

 

Lulzbot Taz 5 (2 machines are available)

This single extrusion machine offers faster printing for large objects by utilizing larger filament, nozzle, and heated building surface.

Available filament types for low fidelity FDM printers

1. PLA (Polylactic acid, Poly)

  • Tg=60-65°C, 
  • Tm=173-178°C, usually printed around 200°C 
  • Tensile strength=46–65 GPa, (stiff but brittle) 
  • Plants’ (corn starch, sugarcane) derived biodegradable material (no fume) Soluble in chlorinated solvents, hot benzene, tetrahydrofuran, and dioxane.

2. ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)

  • Tg=105°C 
  • No Tm (amorphous), usually printed around 220°C Tensile strength=34-38 GPa, 
  • Petroleum derived material (little fume during printing) Soluble in esters, ketones, ethylene dichloride and acetone.

3. HIPS (High impact polystyrene)

  • Tg=105°C, 
  • Tm=240°C 
  • Tensile strength=32 GPa 
  • HIPS can be used support material for ABS. Soluble in Dilimonene (D-Limonene)
