Use simple indentations to indicate subheadings; you will thus avoid any kind of spacing or tabbing problems. To format leader dots properly, use tab options (simply hitting the period key and space bar will not align dots or page numbers correctly).

Begin numbering pages of the report with the Table of Contents, starting with ii.

Tip: Use Styles or use the CHEN Lab Report Template, which uses Styles to fit these guidelines. By using the template, you can easily add new headings or subheadings, which have been preformatted to meet the lab report guidelines. The preformatted template will also automatically create the Table of Contents. Therefore, when you add a new heading or subheading, each will automatically be added to the Table of Contents, including the page numbers. Though using the Styles feature will help insure that your report is correctly formatted, you should still check over your work to make sure that it meets all of the report requirements. (Consult the Template Instructions for guidelines on using the template.)
