What is Biomedical Engineering?

Biomedical engineering is a diverse, multidisciplinary field that uses engineering, science and technology to solve medical problems and other problems involving living systems.

What do Biomedical Engineers do?

Biomedical engineers use traditional engineering expertise to analyze and solve problems in biology and medicine, providing an overall enhancement of health care.  Students choose the biomedical engineering field to be of service to people, to partake in the excitement of working with living systems, and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care.  Biomedical engineers work with other health care professionals including physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians.  Biomedical engineers may be called upon in a wide range of capacities:  to design instruments, devices, and software, to bring together knowledge from many technical sources to develop new procedures, or to conduct research needed to solve clinical problems.

In What Areas are Biomedical Engineers Employed?

Biomedical engineering graduates will be prepared to work in a wide variety of different areas:

  • Medical Device Design, Analysis, Marketing, and Utilization - medical device industry, medical centers, and government
  • Medical Device Regulation - medical device industry and government
  • Hospital Systems and Clinical Engineering - hospitals and medical centers
  • Physiological Systems Analysis - hospitals, medical centers, research organizations, medical device industry, and government
  • Biomedical Engineering Research - universities, medical centers, research organizations, and government
  • Rehabilitation Engineering - medical centers, rehabilitation clinics and centers, hospitals, and schools
  • Consulting - private or general engineering consulting firms
  • Other - graduate school, medical school, dental school, optometry school, veterinary school, pharmacy school, or other allied health fields

The curriculum is designed to accommodate individual student interests by offering a number of elective courses that complement our core curriculum and provide a specialized focus to our students' basic education.

Senior year analysis and design projects require students to utilize the skills that will be required of them in a professional setting in which they're the engineer:

  • identifying the problem,
  • thinking creatively,
  • obtaining and designing a solution, and
  • articulating the processes used and the final outcome to a group of one's peers.
