What is the Academy?

The Distinguished Aerospace Engineering Alumni Academy of Texas A&M University was established to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding alumni, champion the Aerospace Engineering profession, create a sense of community/camaraderie within the department, and facilitate interaction/continuity with the student body and our alumni and corporate friends.

When did the Academy begin?

The Academy was initiated with the induction of one alumnus in May 2009 and 2011, respectively. The Academy was formalized in fall 2011 and the charter induction ceremony took place in at the Annual Alumni Awards Banquet in spring 2013. The induction ceremony takes place during the annual awards banquet each year.

How does someone become a member of the Academy?

Inductees are nominated by students, faculty, alumni and anyone else who wishes to submit a nomination. Alumni (and others) are recognized in one four categories:

  • Outstanding Young Aerospace Engineer
  • Outstanding Aerospace Engineer
  • Distinguished Aerospace Engineering Alumni
  • Aerospace Engineering Honorary Engineer Award

Specific requirements for each category are described on the nomination page. The charter induction will include approximately 10 members. A 5-member nomination review committee developed by the Advisory Board will review all nominations received and recommend the most outstanding nominees to the Head of Aerospace Engineering for final selection and approval by the faculty of the Aerospace Engineering Department. Subsequent inductions will be limited to 3-5 new Academy members and the nomination committee will be composed of five Academy members. Current Academy members may be nominated for the next level of membership. In addition, every three years, the faculty selection committee will review all Academy members to determine if any member qualifies for the next level of Academy membership.

Who are the current members of the Academy?

The names of the current academy members, along with their photographs and biographical sketches can be found on the Academy membership page. The members are also featured in a permanent display in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
