Overview

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is located in the city of Chennai, which is also the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India. The institute is situated on Sardar Patel Road and is flanked by Adyar, Taramani and Velachery. The campus is located opposite the Central Leather Research Institute and Anna University, and is spread over 250 hectares of lush green forest. The campus is well connected by buses and local trains and lies midway between the Chennai Airport and the Central Railway station.

The campus is around 14 kilometers from the Central Railway Station. Adyar is the nearest bus terminal to the campus. The institute itself is located around 2.5 kilometers inside the campus. Two parallel roads, Bonn Avenue and Delhi Avenue, lead you under a canopy of green through the residential zone to Gajendra Circle (called GC) and the administrative block. Buses travel between the gate and other locations on campus at regular intervals. The IIT Madras buses (named after mountains) take you to the GC, academic zone and hostels (named after rivers) for a nominal fare. This naming convention has led to the joke that the IIT campus is the land of moving mountains and stationary rivers.
