In the second semester of their sophomore year, students will choose an area of concentration and an area of proficiency from the following two tracks (see below). This means a student can choose to concentrate in mechanical systems and be proficient in structural systems or a student can choose to concentrate in structural systems and be proficient in mechanical systems.
Mechanical Systems for Buildings
Students who select the mechanical systems track prepare for careers with more emphasis on building environment, energy efficiency, HVAC and building environmental controls, including:
- Building thermal and environmental load determination
- Selection and design/layout of equipment
- Air distribution system design
- Building automation and controls
- Indoor air quality and management
- Building energy analysis and system optimization
- Whole building performance and operation
- High-performance buildings (LEED and others)

Structural Systems for Buildings
Students who select the structural systems track prepare for careers with more emphasis on the structural design and safety of buildings, including:
- Structural building loads
- Design and analysis of building structural systems
- Concrete and steel design for buildings
- Integration of structural design with other buildings systems
