Emergency
Preparedness and Crisis Management

Disasters,
Crises, and Emergencies strike without warning. A
fire sweeps through an office. An explosion rips through
a laboratory. An earthquake shakes computers from
high storage shelves. A sudden power outage shuts
down critical equipment or networks, and leaves personnel
in the dark. A flood submerges irreplaceable records
or perishable materials. A gas leak creates an explosive
atmosphere within a facility. A hazardous chemical
spill shuts down facilities and roads. When an emergency
occurs, appropriate response in the first minutes
could mean the difference between human & business
survival and disastrous loss.
Successful emergency management is about planning
& readiness; it's about people helping people, rescuer
safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest
number. It is a positive and realistic approach to
emergency and disaster situations where individuals
and organizations may be initially on their own and
their actions can make a difference. Through training,
all individuals can assist in evacuations, put out
small fires, search for and rescue victims safely;
and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers
to be effective. Individuals can provide basic medical
aid by learning to treat the three killers by opening
airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock.
If an emergency occurs, be calm and be patient. Follow
the instructions of local emergency responders. Evacuate
your facility or building, and go to a safe place
at least 150 feet from affected buildings. Assist
others in evacuating safely.
Readiness is not possible without commitment. Before
disaster occurs, consider volunteering to participate
on your buildingÕs Emergency Planning Committee. Report
suspicious, dangerous or unsafe conditions so they
can be corrected or repaired. Taking preparatory action
provides assurance than you can exert a measure of
control and order even in the face of devastating
events, and that you and your organization can recover
and return to business with minimal impact.
Don't
be afraid... Be Ready... Be Prepared... Be Safe!
