Requirements 

The Engineering Honors (EH) program for students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering majoring in Electrical Engineering or in Computer Engineering (ECEN Track) has the following features and requirements in addition to the requirements of the general EH program

Additional features of the ECEN Track of EH include:

  • Renewable Academic Scholarship. Students who have active status in the ECEN track of EH are eligible to apply for an annual scholarship from the ECEN Department.
  • Special honors faculty advisors. The ECEN EH Coordinator serves as an advisor for the students in the EH ECEN Track and meets with each student in the program at least once during each semester that the student is registered for courses on the Texas A&M College Station campus. Additionally, each EH scholar in the ECEN Track will be assigned a faculty mentor after their first semester in the program based on their research and career interests.
  • Other benefits. EH Scholars in the ECEN Track have priority for paid summer and academic year research internships, special opportunities to interact with departmental industrial partners who have internship and fulltime employment opportunities, opportunities to be peer teachers, and access to travel funds to attend technical conferences. 

Additional academic requirements for the ECEN Track of EH include:

  • Complete a thesis with the Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) program.
  • Completion of at least 21 Honors graded credits (i.e., 3 credits more than the basic EH requirements) from any department in Engineering, the Department of Mathematics or Physics, or ENGR 100-, 200-, 300- or 400-level, with the same requirements as the EH course work requirements and including at least 3 Honors credits in a ECEN 400-level or approved graduate course and 6 hours of ECEN 491H taken as part of the URS program. 

To maintain active status in the ECEN Track of the EH Scholars program, students need to:

  • Pass at least one approved honors course with a grade of B or better during each academic year;
  • Meet with the ECEN EH Coordinator during each regular semester (Fall or Spring) in which they are registered for courses on the Texas A&M College Station campus;
  • Participate in at least two ECEN EH program approved activities each regular semester (Fall or Spring) in which they are registered for courses on the Texas A&M College Station campus. 

Additional grade requirements at the time of graduation for the ECEN Track of EH include:

  • A minimum term grade point average of 3.25 in the final semester.
  • No grade below C on the transcript.

ECEN curricular notes:

  • The ECEN departmental website (ece.tamu.edu) offers a list of regularly taught honors courses
  • Independent study courses (ECEN 28H, ECEN 485H) and research courses (ECEN 491H) require prior approval of the ECEN EH Coordinator.
  • Any 600-level ECEN course can be used for honors credit except for ECEN 681, ECEN 684, ECEN 685, and ECEN 691.
  • EH Scholars may complete senior design courses (ECEN 403 and ECEN 404) in addition to their UGRS and Honors Thesis requirements, if they so choose.
