Electrical engineering undergrad wins Outstanding Thesis Award

Elizabeth Wells, an undergraduate student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, hasĀ  received the “Outstanding Thesis Award” for the Undergraduate Research Scholars Class of 2009.

Wells, a student under the guidance of Regents Professor B. Don Russell, received the award from the Division of Research and Graduate Studies for her thesis, “Optimization of Surveys for Detection of Energized Structures to Eliminate Electrical Hazards to the Public in New York City.”

Dr. Robert C, Webb, associate dean for undergraduate research in the Division of Research and Graduate Studies, says in his letter to Wells:

“Not only was the research that you carried out well planned and an excellent example of Aggies working towards the greater common good, but your findings may ultimately help to set new parameters to maximize use of funds while increasing the safety of individuals and animals in an urban setting. Further, you did an excellent job in explaining the importance and impact of what you accomplished in your theses, even to those not directly in your field.”

Wells, an electrical engineering major from Fort Worth, went to Southwest High School. She will graduate early in December 2009. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority, the Student Engineers’ Council and Tau Beta Pi.

Wells, whose fiance attends Texas Tech as a mechanical engineering major, says she plans to attend graduate school at Texas A&M in electrical engineering. Honors include being a session winner and winning first place for her topology for her thesis during Student Research Week. Wells interned at Bell Helicopter and is currently interning there again.
