Five students receive Outstanding Senior Award

Matthew Waters, Hayes Stripling, Jennifer Christensen, Craig C. Brown, Andrea Ryan and Eric Calderon.

The Dwight Look College of Engineering honored five students with its Craig C. Brown Outstanding Senior Engineer Award during an Engineering Advisory Council dinner Oct. 16.

Seniors Eric Calderon, Jennifer Christensen, Andrea Ryan, Hayes Stripling and Matthew Waters received the annual award based on their academic achievement, character and leadership abilities. Each of the seniors received an engraved medallion and a $5,000 educational grant.

Calderon is a senior in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering. He is president of the Student Engineers’ Council and the co-founder and leader of the Engineering Ambassadors Program in association with the Office of the Dean. He participated in the Qatar Leadership Exchange Program and is the co-founder of the Student Engineers’ Council at Qatar.

He received the 2007 Texas A&M University Academic Excellence Award and the Turner Leadership Award.

He has interned with Exxon Mobil Corp., Hunt Petroleum Corp., Chevron and Anadarko Corp.

Christensen, a senior in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering, served as the president of the Texas A&M chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. She was the director of unity for the Memorial Student Center Relations as part of the Student Government Association.

She participates in the Engineering Scholars Program and received an Academic Excellence Award twice. She was a recipient for the Silver Key Academic Award and the Buck Weirus Spirit Award.

She has interned with Exxon Mobil Corp. for two summers and was a teaching assistant in 2007.

Ryan is a senior in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering. She was the executive director of service and diversity in the Memorial Student Center Freshman in Service and Hosting organization. She also was a counselor for Fish Camp. She participated in a study abroad program in Spain, the Abbott Family Leadership Conference and the Spencer Leadership Conference.

She was a Texas A&M Honors Program President’s Endowed Scholar and a Houston Endowed Scholar. She has interned for BP.

Stripling, a senior in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, is vice president of the Student Engineers’ Council. He participates in community service projects such as Replant, Big Event and Habitat for Humanity, and was honored by the American Nuclear Society as Outstanding Student Conference Director after he led the Texas A&M chapter in hosting the society’s largest student conference.

He is the co-founder of the Engineering Ambassadors Program in association with the Office of the Dean. He was the third-place winner of the Texas A&M Ideas Challenge and Entrepreneurship Contest in 2006.

He has been an intern at Knolls Atomic Power Lab and Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant.

Waters is a senior in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is the president of Pi Tau Sigma. He was in Aggie Fish Club and has been a Fish Camp counselor three times. He also serves as the Outreach/Awareness Chair for the Traditions Council.

A President’s Endowed Scholar in the Texas A&M Honors Program, he represents Texas A&M as a speaker before numerous constituent groups and has been assigned the esponsibility of hosting honored families at Silver Taps.

He was an intern at Exxon Mobil Corp. for two summers. He also interned with Dunhill Products and Gulf Atlantic Operations.

The Engineering Faculty Senior Award was renamed the Craig C. Brown Outstanding Senior Engineer Award in 1996 in recognition of Brown’s endowment for the award. He received the award as a Class of 1975 civil engineering senior. Currently, Brown is chief operating officer, owner and president of Bray International Inc. as well as chairman and president of the Craig C. Brown Foundation.
