Texas A&M petroleum engineering scholarship honors oil producer George Odum
A new petroleum engineering scholarship at Texas A&M University honors George Odum of Houston for his long career in the oil and gas industry.
The George A. Odum ’67 Endowed Scholarship in Petroleum Engineering will provide one or more scholarships to Texas residents who are undergraduates in the university’s petroleum engineering program. The initial gift is an endowment at the Texas A&M Foundation established by T.A. Hillin, Odum’s industry colleague and former college roommate.
“This scholarship honoring George Odum and his outstanding career will help countless deserving students earn their degrees to become petroleum engineers and industry leaders,” said Dr. Stephen A. Holditch, department head and holder of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation Chair.
A native of Liberty, Texas, Odum earned a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering at Texas A&M in 1967. He was active in the Student Engineers’ Council, served as president of the student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and was a member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society.
“This scholarship is meaningful to me because the financial assistance that I received as a student enabled me to reach my academic and career goals. It’s a wonderful opportunity to help others meet their goals,” Odum said.
He started his career as an engineer with Pan American Petroleum Corp. After 10 years with Pan Am (Amoco), Odum spent a decade with KP Exploration.
He joined Randall & Dewey in 1996 as vice president of engineering and became vice president for A and D Projects five years later. The global oil and gas advisory leader was acquired by the Jefferies Group Inc. in 2005.
As vice president for Jefferies Randall & Dewey, Odum advises clients with transaction-focused petroleum engineering expertise. He has contributed to more than 100 successful oil and gas transactions, and has conducted formal reserve evaluations in basins from California to Appalachia and from Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico.
He is a licensed professional engineer in Texas and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers, the Houston Geological Society and the Independent Petroleum Association of America.
He and his wife, Anne, have two adult children. The couple enjoys church activities and spoiling their granddaughters.
Contributions to the George A. Odum ’67 Endowed Scholarship in Petroleum Engineering can be mailed to Mr. Brady Bullard, Texas A&M Foundation, Engineering Development Office, 3126 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-3126 with the words “Odum Scholarship” on the notation line.
