Dr. Kristen Maitland(left), associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been elected to her second three-year term on the board of directors for SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.
Maitland will serve as a society director for three years (2018-20) to oversee the activities of the society in the interest of the society membership and the optics and photonics community. The board of directors establishes policy and strategy, assures that the society bylaws are followed and approves the budgets for expenditure of society resources.
Maitland received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from California Polytechnic State University, and her doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
In addition to Maitland’s appointment, Maryellen Giger(right), a Hagler Fellow at Texas A&M and the A.N. Pritzker Professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago, has been elected to serve as president of SPIE in 2018.
SPIE is an educational not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based science, engineering and technology. The society serves nearly 264,000 constituents from approximately 166 countries, offering conferences and their published proceedings, continuing education, books, journals and the SPIE Digital Library. In 2016, SPIE provided $4 million in support of education and outreach programs.
